Seeing Beyond Circumstances: Transforming Perspectives During a Global Crisis
By 2020, TCIM INITIATIVES had already begun establishing itself as a movement dedicated to helping young people develop healthier identities through storytelling and self-awareness. However, no one anticipated that the world would soon be confronted by one of the greatest disruptions in modern history.
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic brought schools to a standstill, restricted public gatherings, and significantly disrupted the educational and emotional development of millions of young people. Isolation, uncertainty, fear, and anxiety became common experiences for teenagers navigating an unfamiliar world.
For many organizations, the pandemic meant postponing programmes and waiting for better times.
For TCIM, it became an opportunity to demonstrate that identity development should never stop, even during uncertainty.
The organization believed that while young people could not control the circumstances surrounding them, they could choose how they interpreted those circumstances. Rather than allowing the pandemic to define an entire generation of teenagers, TCIM challenged them to become authors of a different story.
Inspired by this observation, TCIM was launched under its original name, The Camera Is Me (TCIM), as a creative self-awareness campaign on Instagram.
Participants were invited to combine an old photograph with a recent one and reflect on the journey between those two moments.
At first glance, it looked like a simple photo challenge.
In reality, it was something much deeper.
The Third Edition Conference
“The Eyes That Sees”
On 5th December 2020, TCIM successfully hosted the 3rd Edition of its Annual Conference, adopting a creative hybrid approach that combined physical and virtual participation in response to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic.
The conference was built around a compelling theme:
“The Eyes That Sees.”
The theme invited teenagers to look beyond immediate challenges and discover the power of perspective.
Throughout history, two people have often experienced similar circumstances yet arrived at completely different destinations—not because their situations were different, but because the way they interpreted those experiences shaped their beliefs, choices, and actions.
This idea became the heartbeat of the conference.
Participants were encouraged to understand that life’s greatest battles are often won or lost in the mind long before they become visible in everyday life.
Instead of allowing disappointment, failure, or uncertainty to become permanent labels, teenagers were challenged to reinterpret adversity as an opportunity for growth, resilience, and purpose.
Storytelling as a Tool for Transformation
True to TCIM’s educational philosophy, learning was never confined to lectures alone.
The conference combined keynote presentations with creative competitions that allowed participants to express their own stories through various artistic disciplines.
Teenagers competed in:
- Story Writing
- Acting
- Portrait Sketching
These competitions were intentionally selected because each discipline required participants to observe, interpret, imagine, and communicate stories—skills that reinforce reflection, creativity, and emotional awareness.
Rather than rewarding academic performance alone, TCIM celebrated creativity as an avenue for identity development and self-expression.
To encourage excellence, winners across the various categories received a combined ₦75,000 in cash prizes, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to recognizing and investing in young talent.
For many participants, the competitions became more than contests.
They became opportunities to discover gifts they had never fully recognized within themselves.
Learning from Industry Leaders
One of the defining strengths of every TCIM conference has been the participation of accomplished professionals who bring real-world experience into conversations with young people.
The 2020 conference welcomed Dr. Henry Obidi, a renowned Nollywood film director and respected creative professional whose career has been built around the power of storytelling.
Drawing from his extensive experience in filmmaking, Dr. Obidi challenged participants to recognize that every compelling story contains obstacles, conflict, growth, and eventual transformation.
He encouraged teenagers to understand that difficulties should never be viewed as the end of their story but as chapters capable of producing wisdom, resilience, and purpose.
His presence demonstrated one of TCIM’s core values: exposing young people to professionals whose personal journeys reflect the very principles being taught.
Alongside Dr. Obidi, other facilitators and mentors contributed practical insights that encouraged participants to see themselves beyond their present circumstances and embrace the possibilities of their future.
These interactions reinforced TCIM’s commitment to connecting teenagers with credible voices capable of inspiring lasting transformation.
Building Hope During Uncertain Times
Hosting a youth conference during one of the most challenging periods in recent history demonstrated more than organizational resilience.
It demonstrated commitment.
While many programmes around the world paused, TCIM continued creating safe spaces where teenagers could reflect, learn, create, and imagine hopeful futures.
The organization recognized that crises often become defining chapters in a young person’s life story.
Its mission was to ensure that those chapters became stories of resilience rather than defeat.
By helping participants “see differently,” TCIM was helping them “live differently.”
That commitment continues to define the organization today.
